Nalam Diabetes Awareness Camps

Diabetes is creating a great havoc to our society, with the present estimated diabetic population of about 5 crore in India is expected to double to about 9 crore in 2030. In addition to the increasing number of diabetics, the complications due to the disease are also on the rise. The primary reasons for the rise in complications are delay in diagnosis and lack of regular follow up.

The routine free diabetes detection programs have many drawbacks like

  1. The people who participate in a free diabetes detection camp are not completely aware as to why and what for they are tested
  2. The participants do not clearly understand the importance of early diagnosis of diabetes
  3. The persons who are diagnosed with diabetes for the first time in a camp are not aware of the course of disease as well as the need for regular medical care
  4. The free camps create a subset of population called 'Camp Hoppers' who get treated only in camps, in and around their place of residence

Nalam Hospital tries to address the delay in detection of diabetes as well as the shortcomings of a routine free diabetes detection camp through Nalam Free Diabetes Awareness camps.

The key features of these camps are

  1.  A counselor with the help of multimedia explains the basic of diabetes, its detection methods, treatment plans and ways to prevent complications due to the disease to the public in a simplified manner, in their language of communication
  2. The public is subjected to few questionnaires at the end of counseling, to test if the lecture on the basics of diabetes has been well received and understood
  3. Patients who are a known diabetic and those who are diagnosed for the first time are followed up after 2 weeks with remainder cards and telephone calls
  4. No medications are prescribed in the camps in order to prevent formation of 'Camp Hoppers'
